Spiralling divorce costs and poor quality legal services are adding to the misery for many divorcing people, the Legal Ombudsman has said.
The Legal Ombudsman’s role is to resolve any disputes between lawyers and their clients.
Nicola Whitley, expert divorce lawyer at Swain & Co wants to ensure people that we provide clear information:
“We offer fixed fees for divorces so that you know what it will cost at the outset. If your case becomes more complex, we will discuss options with you and will not incur any costs without your agreement."
"We work hard to maintain our good reputation and want you to have confidence in the work we are doing for you during an emotionally difficult time.”
It is not acceptable that other firms are charging people more than had been agreed without telling them. Some examples from the Legal Ombudsman include a charge of £15,000 more than anticipated, including a £4,000 charge for photocopying!
Samantha Lee, divorce lawyer and family mediator at Swain & Co goes onto say, “At Swain & Co we have never had a complaint regarding our fees dealt with by the Legal Ombudsman.”
With the cuts to Legal Aid due in April, more people will be paying for divorce privately. Therefore we want to help by being as transparent about our cost as we can.
This is why we have created the Your Divorce, Your Way pricing structure - please see our divorce page for more information on the fixed fee packages for divorce costs.
