According to the National Center for Health Statistics in America, around 60% of marriages where couples are between 20 and 25 when they say their vows end in divorce.
That is a scary statistic.
But, like all statistics, this needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as we reported previously that older couples are also divorcing or ending their relationship sooner than previous generations. There is no magic age for marriage.
The theme that is recurrent is marriage itself, and the value put on this. Generations before us got married younger and stayed together and you do still get couples that have been together since school and stay together.
No couple gets married with divorce in mind, and sometimes the decision to end a relationship is a long and difficult one. If that time comes, no statistics are going to make the couple find the process easier because it was statistically inevitable.
What is needed is advice and support and, where possible, an amicable agreement between the couple on financial matters and child arrangements.
This is where mediation services can help.
