The South East Coast Ambulance Service is rated inadequate by Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Following a CQC inspection of South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust it has been rated inadequate.
The Care Quality Commission have picked up a number of failings including:-
- Failure to respond in a timely fashion;
- Processes to ensure that all equipment was properly maintained and secured were inadequate;
- Staff were allowed to develop practices outside national guidelines allegedly placing patients using the South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust at risk.
The Trust has said that plans were already in place to address these issues.
However, the CQC has said that these arrangements were not operated effectively. More work needs to be done in order to enforce various safety measures and changes.
Another concern of the CQC was complaints of harassment and bullying amongst the staff.
Many individuals do not receive the training needed in order to work efficiently within this profession and are not supported by leaders/senior members of staff.
The Medical Negligence Team at Swain & Co Solicitors are concerned. It is worrying that medical practitioners who attend patients first and provide initial crucial care are harassed/bullied and undertrained.
These medical practitioners are surely unlikely to be in a position to provide good quality care. They may be mentally drained due to harassment/bullying or lack confidence as a result of poor training.
It seems that changes need to be implemented as a matter of urgency within South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.
Professor Sir Mike Richards, Chief Inspector of Hospitals has said: “NHS Improvement will soon appoint an Improvement Director to provide the Trust with additional expert advice and support on the ground to improve the quality of its care, and will consider what further action might be needed to address the Care Quality Commission’s concerns.”
Geraint Davies, acting Chief Executive has said: “We are determined to implement the changes required to restore confidence in our service.”
