What is asbestosis?

Asbestosis is the scarring of the tissues of the lungs and those diagnosed are of increased risk of developing lung cancer and mesothelioma in the future.

Symptoms of Asbestosis

Symptoms of asbestosis include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest Pain
  • Tiredness
  • Swollen fingertips

If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the above symptoms, we urge you to see your GP as soon as you are able to.

Diagnosis of Asbestosis

Many of the symptoms of asbestosis mimic less serious conditions such as pneumonia and asthma, so diagnosis can be difficult.

However, usually the process for diagnosing asbestosis is through medical consultation and a Chest x-ray or CT scan.

Pulmonary function testing may also be carried out to assess how well the lungs are functioning.

If you or a loved one have received a diagnosis of asbestosis, you are not alone, there are many groups offering help, advice and support.

We are also here to help – call us for free advice about finding out how, why and who is responsible for your exposure to asbestos.

Treatment of asbestosis

There are currently no treatments to reverse asbestosis, but there are treatments that can slow the progress and relieve symptoms.

Oxygen therapy is commonly offered to sufferers who find breathing difficult.

We are here to help you

If you or a loved one feel that their asbestosis diagnosis is as a result of negligence by a current or former employer, contact Swain & Co solicitors today for free, expert advice over the phone about the possibility of bringing an asbestosis claim.

Our team are experienced in helping people diagnosed with asbestosis and their families to bring successful claims on a no win no fee basis.

Some of our success cases:

Mesothelioma Compensation for Dock Worker

Johnathan was instructed by the estate of JH who had been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos dust in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Unfortunately, JH passed away before providing instructions but Johnathan brought a successful claim against his former employer. John secured a compensation award of over £150,000 for JH’s family.

Mesothelioma compensation for construction worker

Johnathan was instructed by a client who had been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos dust whilst building new homes on constructions sites in the 1960’s. Johnathan brought a successful claim against the construction firm and secured a compensation award of over £80,000 for his client.

Asbestosis compensation for electrician

Instructed by a retired electrician who had come into contact with asbestos whilst undertaking electrical contracting work in schools in the Midlands during the 1970s and 1980s. The client was diagnosed with asbestosis, a debilitating asbestos related disease, and passed away during the course of the case. Assistance was given to the client with his benefit applications and providing his family with advice on probate issues after the client had passed away. An award of £65,000 was obtained.

Compensation for sufferer of pleural thickening

Instructed by a former builder who worked on new build housing sites in the 1960s. The client was exposed to workers cutting sheets of asbestos in his immediate vicinity. Evidence to support the client’s claim was obtained quickly and was sent to the Defendant’s insurers. An award of £27,000 was obtained.

Compensation for asbestos related lung cancer

Instructed by a sufferer of asbestos related lung cancer. The client had lagged pipe work with asbestos materials in the early 1960s but the company had ceased to exist. Enquiries to trace where the liabilities of the company had gone and to inform the insurers were carried out quickly. A witness appeal was made. An award of £20,000 was obtained.

Mesothelioma Claim for Dockyard Worker

RS was employed as a pipe “lagger” in the dockyard.  He was exposed to asbestos dust whilst working in the 1970’s and was diagnosed with mesothelioma.   RS passed away before the claim concluded.  A successful claim was brought against his employer following RS death and an award of over £80,000 was obtained.
