What is asbestosis?
Asbestosis is the scarring of the tissues of the lungs and those diagnosed are of increased risk of developing lung cancer and mesothelioma in the future.
Symptoms of Asbestosis
Symptoms of asbestosis include:
- Persistent cough
- Shortness of breath
- Chest Pain
- Swollen fingertips
If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the above symptoms, we urge you to see your GP as soon as you are able to.
Diagnosis of Asbestosis
Many of the symptoms of asbestosis mimic less serious conditions such as pneumonia and asthma, so diagnosis can be difficult.
However, usually the process for diagnosing asbestosis is through medical consultation and a Chest x-ray or CT scan.
Pulmonary function testing may also be carried out to assess how well the lungs are functioning.
If you or a loved one have received a diagnosis of asbestosis, you are not alone, there are many groups offering help, advice and support.
We are also here to help – call us for free advice about finding out how, why and who is responsible for your exposure to asbestos.
Treatment of asbestosis
There are currently no treatments to reverse asbestosis, but there are treatments that can slow the progress and relieve symptoms.
Oxygen therapy is commonly offered to sufferers who find breathing difficult.
