India is a Chartered Legal Executive Lawyer, specialising in Mental Health.
India Jefferson-Grant joined Swain & Co Solicitors in July 2014 following completion of her LLB Law Degree at Queen Mary, University of London. India obtained a high 2:1 in her degree and was ready to begin her career in law so began assisting Melanie Lidstone-Land with Clinical Negligence, Mental Health and Personal Injury matters.
India completed her study for the Charted Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) Graduate Fast-Track Diploma in June 2016 and her Work-Based Learning application was accepted by CILEx Regulation in October 2017. She is now a Fellow of CILEx and a qualified Lawyer.
The majority of the cases India runs involve people who are at their most vulnerable, with the vast proportion of her work being assisting vulnerable individuals who are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended). This involves attending psychiatric hospitals to meet with clients, take initial instructions and attending Care Programme Approach meetings and Hospital Managers Hearings to support her clients. India was accepted onto the Law Society Mental Health Accreditation Scheme in January 2017 so she now regularly represents her clients before the First-Tier Tribunal, cross-examining witnesses, taking evidence-in-chief from her clients and independent experts and making submissions on behalf of her clients.
India prides herself on giving a voice to some of the most vulnerable individuals in society, ensuring they have access to justice. She is praised by her clients for her client care standards and the individualistic approach she takes to every single case. She is aware that no one client is the same and she has represented a wide range of clients under all sections of the Mental Health Act at many hospitals throughout the country.
