Domestic abuse is a problem across the country, and Sergeant James Noble, of the Safer Neighbourhood team for Eastney and Milton, says that his team deals with it on a three hourly basis.
According to domestic abuse charity Aurora New Dawn, they have had 173 people from Portsmouth referred to them for help in the past 6 months. This equates to one every day.
However, this highlights that more needs to be done to raise awareness of domestic abuse and get people to come forward and get help.
Mary-Anne Beedle, solicitor at Swain & Co comments, “For every reported case of domestic abuse, there are many more that go unreported. Victims of domestic abuse need to know how and where to seek help. It is still a hidden crime within our society.”
Domestic abuse is defined as an incident of threatening behaviour, abuse or violence and does not have to be physical. Domestic abuse is between adults who are or have been in a relationship or are family members.
If you are fearful of a former partner, or another person, there is help available. Swain & Co can apply for an injunction to prevent someone from threatening or harassing you.
