Child homelessness increases dramatically

Child homelessness increases dramatically

Official figures reveal that child homelessness has increased by 80% since 2010[1].

A new household becomes homeless every 5 minutes.

These figures come as there are increasing concerns with cuts to housing benefit, lack of affordable housing and lack of funding in homelessness services that more families will end up homeless.

Since 2010 household in temporary accommodation has risen 74%

¾ of these households are families with children.

As housing lawyers, we are shocked by the amount of families in temporary accommodation. Children need stability and somewhere to call home. Temporary accommodation offers neither of these.

There is a distinct lack of investment in affordable homes to buy and rent.

Polly Neate is the chief exec of Shelter, and she says we cannot ‘ignore the frightening levels of homelessness in England right now. Hundreds of thousands of people are desperate for help, from those sleeping on the street to families trapped in B&Bs.”

Building houses is not the issue, its affordability of those homes.

People are facing rising private rent prices, frozen benefits or being stuck on list for social housing that is non-existent.

The Government says that is committed to address this crisis. They are investing £1.2 billion to tackle homelessness. They also say they are empowering councils to build more council homes.

Luke Ridge, Housing adviser at Swain & Co solicitors says,

“Because of the strain on resources, many Councils fall short of their obligation towards those threatened with homelessness in their district. We continually provide advice and representation for clients who have been mistreated by the Council when applying for homelessness. This is a complex area of law where we have a good success rate in protecting our client’s rights and ensuring suitable accommodation is secured. Getting help early is important and we would encourage anybody embarking on a homelessness application to their Council to get in touch.”
