Legislation planned for inclusion in the Queen’s speech next month is to be put on hold. The proposals will be published in draft form so they can be scrutinised and examined fully.
At Swain &Co.we welcome this approach as it reassures the public that nothing will be fast tracked through Parliament and the existing laws will be look at to see if they are sufficient in their current form.
Following our news post from yesterday, Graeme Swain, specialist civil liberties lawyer at Swain & Co. has said, “Extending the reach of the State is a sensitive civil liberties and human rights matters, and we hope that the draft will see legislation retained, with perhaps some clauses. It is essential that the government gets this right.”
At the heart of the work we do here at Swain & Co. are our clients’ human rights. All the areas of law we practice could be said to contain Human Rights elements. Areas relevant to Human Rights issues include:
- Prisoners rights
- Provision of medical treatment
- Detention under the Mental Health Act

- Local Authority cutbacks
- Closure of care homes
- Inhuman and degrading treatment
