Huntington’s disease “protects” against cancer

New research has emerged today from the Lancet Oncology which shows that patients with Huntingdon’s disease appear to have protection against cancer. The study undertaken in Sweden analysed data from 1969 up to 2008 which showed that out of the 1510 patients examined, 91 of those developed cancer. This represents a  53% reduction to those of the general population.

The authors of the findings said: “we found that the incidence of cancer was significantly lower among patients with polyglutamine diseases than in the general population."

They went on to say that the reasons behind the protective factors were unclear and would warrant further research.

Eleanor Barrie from Cancer Research UK, said the results were interesting and that scientists at Cancer Research UK were now probing the genetic faults that contribute to cancer, and this research opens up new avenues to explore.

Swain & Co welcomes any developments in this area of cancer treatment but in too many cases patients are not receiving the treatment they require leading to further complications and in some cases short life expectancy. We at Swain & Co are dedicated to helping patients and their families claim for compensation they deserve if their treatment has been negligent.
